Placements are provided in hospitals located in and around the city of Arusha. This program is particularly suited for those volunteers looking for international hands-on experience and overseas medical work exposure. Medical professionals are also welcomed to be a part of this project and contribute as much as they can. Work will vary depending on the experiences of individual volunteers.

The local team in Arusha also organises community outreach events at the orphanages or local communities where we try to provide health care services to those who don't have them in abundance and lack proper medical assistance. Most of these community outreach events are undertaken in village communities when we have a number of medical volunteers in the program.A certain minimum number of participants are required to be in the program to conduct the outreach events.

Sample Placement Profile - St. Elizabeth Hospital, Arusha

St. Elizabeth Hospital, commonly referred to as "Kwa Father Babu" in Arusha, is situated in the Ngarenaro suburb in Arusha. As a Council Designated Hospital, St. Elizabeth serves as a referral center for local dispensaries and health centers within the Arusha municipality. Other hospitals also direct patients to St. Elizabeth for specialised services that they may not provide. 

St. Elizabeth is one of the three largest hospitals in Arusha offering both inpatient and outpatient services.

The hospital provides health services through the following departments:

  • Outpatient and Emergency Medicine

  • Internal Medicine Ward

  • Surgical Ward

  • Ophthalmology

  • Pediatrics and Neonatology

  • Intensive Care Unit

  • Pharmacy

  • Radiology Department

Participants will work alongside hospital staff, assisting during ward rounds and in the theater, and shadowing nurses and doctors in various clinics.Depending on your goals, you can rotate through different departments and clinics. We ensure that each participant is paired with an experienced supervisor who can provide guidance. Being part of the healthcare network in Arusha allows us to connect you with knowledgeable mentors in your field of interest.

Please note that this is a sample placement and volunteers can be placed at other placements as well in Arusha. Our volunteers work in multiple hospital placements in and around the city of Arusha.

Volunteer Work Schedule

As a volunteer for the Medical Program in Arusha, Tanzania, your general schedule would be:

  • Sunday - Arrival at the destination (Arusha)

  • Monday - An orientation session will be conducted by the local coordinator, covering the major topics such as safety, culture, language, places to visit, behavior, food, and other suggestions for things to do in Tanzania

  • Tuesday to Friday - Volunteer work at the placement

  • Weekends - Explore the city / Head out for wildlife safaris and much more

  • Breakfast - 07:30 am onwards

  • Working hours at the placement - 08:30 am to 12:30 pm and 02:00 pm to 03:00 pm

  • Lunch - 12:30 pm onwards

  • Dinner - 06:30 pm onwards

The same work schedule continues from the second week onwards (Monday - Friday)

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities

Depending on your knowledge, experience and skills you will performing the following duties and responsibilities at the project :-

  • Shadow and Observe doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in your allocated department

  • Depending on your skills, you'll be assigned work like suturing wounds, giving vaccinations etc

  • Assist patients with activities such as getting them from one service point to another

  • You need to be actively involved in the daily procedures of the hospital, taking rounds of the wards, maintaining files, and doing routine patient check ups like measuring Blood pressure, pulse, check fever etc

  • Helping in any medical outreach events organised by the local team

As a medical volunteer in Tanzania, you'll have the chance to work alongside experienced healthcare professionals in hospital placements. If you are a Pre medical. Pre nursing student or a junior medical student, your role will mostly be observational, allowing you to learn from the experts. However, if you're a senior medical or nursing student, you may have the opportunity to take on more hands-on tasks, depending on your experience and the consent of the doctors, nurses, and patients you work with.

While volunteering at the hospital placement, you may encounter different types of cases that are not so common back at home, including dengue fever and many motorcycle accident cases which are common in Arusha.

Overall, your time as a medical volunteer in Tanzania will primarily be an educational experience, offering insight into the healthcare system of Tanzania. You'll gain an understanding of the challenges faced in providing medical care in a resource-limited setting and the differences in healthcare practices compared to your home country. You'll also have the opportunity to learn about common health issues in the region and how they are managed.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older at the time of joining the project. Participants should have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference. Medical volunteers must provide a clean criminal background check report, CV, Passport Copy as well as other documents and credentials pertaining to their qualifications prior to joining the program. Pre Med, Medical, Nursing students, CNA’s,  midwifery and dental students can join the program. All participants need to bring their own scrubs/lab coats with them for wearing at the project.

Airport Transfer
You will be met by our representative at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Kilimanjaro region from where you are transferred to the volunteer house accommodation in Arusha.Volunteers can also arrive in Nairobi and take a direct shuttle or bus to Arusha. They will be picked up at the bus station.For those participants arriving from Dar Es Salaam or Zanzibar, pickup can also be arranged from the much smaller Arusha airport, which serves only domestic flights currently.

Accommodation
Volunteering Solutions offers accommodations for volunteers in a dedicated volunteer house located in Arusha.The housing consists of shared rooms, with options for private upgrades available.The volunteer house includes several rooms and apartments where volunteers can live together comfortably. A well-equipped kitchen is staffed with cooks, and security personnel ensure a safe environment.

Conveniently situated about a 25-minute walk from the main clock tower, the heart of Arusha Town, the house features a spacious common area where volunteers can unwind, socialize, and engage in games like snooker or table tennis. Wi-Fi access is also provided throughout the house. 

For laundry needs, there is a designated washing area for volunteers where you can hand wash your clothes. Alternatively volunteers give their clothes for washing to house helpers at an extra charge or give it to the laundry.Safety is prioritised with CCTV cameras installed and a security guard on duty. The volunteer house has the capacity to accommodate over 50 volunteers.

Orientation
All volunteers will be provided with an orientation session by the local coordinator. Areas like safety, locations, transportation, things to see etc will be covered in the Orientation. After your orientation is over, you will be introduced to your project and given a tour of the local area and town.

Meals
Volunteers are provided with 3 meals in a day. Typical meals include a mix of western and Tanzanian dishes. Sample of meals at the volunteer house are :-

  • For Breakfast : Hot water with option of black tea and coffee,Toasted Bread with Butter, Jam and Seasonal Fruits, and Eggs

  • For Lunch and Dinner : Rice,Spaghetti, Salad,Mashed Potato,French Fries, Chapati as well as other Tanzanian dishes and fruits.

Breakfast and dinner are at the volunteer house while lunch is usually packed for you to eat the placement or can be taken if you are back at the accommodation from the project.

During your Free Time
While in Arusha you will also be interested to travel around and see some of the best and most popular tourist locations. Majority of the participants travel to Masai lands as well go for a safari trip. Going on a safari trip is a must on the trip to Tanzania. The country offers some of the best Safari and wildlife trips in the world. You can travel to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park. Some other local sightseeing options include snake park,Arusha National Park,Lake Duluti,Chemka Hot Springs and Materuni Waterfalls.
