Overview

Volunteering Solutions provides placements to volunteers who are looking to work for children in childcare centers, NGOs that help street children and run kindergartens for disadvantaged children in Rabat. There are a huge number of children living in poverty and are often deprived of education and good life. As a volunteer in the childcare program in Morocco, you would get to work with children ranging from toddlers to young adults around 16 years old.

Volunteering for children in Morocco at these childcare homes is a challenging and satisfying experience at the same time. The contribution of volunteers is helpful at two levels. Firstly, they can help with daily tasks at the center which would, in turn, help the staff. Secondly, they can spend time with the children and give them much-needed love and attention, which they are deprived of.  Our volunteers are looked upon as role models by these children and make a positive impact on their lives.

Sample Placement Profile - Zouhour Yaaniaa Childcare Center
The childcare center is located in Bab Chellah, Derb Fassi area with Medina and is about 10 minute walk from the accommodation. The center provides childcare facilities to about 40 - 50 children from 3 - 5 years of age. Children come from low income and poor families to spend time and learn at the center. Volunteers help with art, craft, music and playing with the children here. Work is generally from 10am - 12pm and then 2pm - 4pm in the afternoon.

Airport Transfer
Volunteers are picked up from the airport (in Rabat) or the bus terminal / Train Station in Rabat and are transferred to their home stay accommodations. For those volunteers arriving at Casablanca, you can take the train from the airport to Rabat Ville train station directly.

Accommodation
Volunteers in Rabat stay together in a volunteer house which is a traditional Moroccan Riad. Note that there is no air conditioning or fan in the riad accommodation. However, Moroccan Riad architecture is generally designed with a tropical climate. Thick walls and an open central courtyard help with ventilation and cooling. The Riad is located in the Medina area and all the volunteer projects and tourist sites are located within close proximity.

Volunteers often share a bedroom with up to 3-4 other participants, of the same gender depending on the number of participants in the program during the given period of time. Participants share common areas, and are welcome to use the courtyard for breaks and meals. WiFi is provided at the accommodation. The bathrooms are shared and the accommodation has a western style toilet system.

During off peak times or due to availability constraints volunteers are also accommodated in a guest house, which is also similar standard and provides the same level of comfort. The guest house is also located in the Medina area and is a 3-5 min walk to the volunteer house. The guest house has good WiFi and also has western style toilets.

Orientation
All volunteers are given an orientation and briefing on arrival. The session shall be conducted by the local coordinator and shall cover important topics about your program, your roles and responsibilities, things to do, safety guidelines, transportation, places to visit, culture and traditions and basic do’s and dont’s. You would also be shown around the area of accommodation, the orientation office and where to buy basic necessities.

Meals
2 Moroccan meals (Breakfast and dinner) will be provided in this project. Typical dinner meals include Couscous, Meat, Bread, Soup, Salad,Olives etc. Breakfast usually comprises of Tea, Coffee, Bread,Yogurt and Cereals whereas dinner includes a traditional Moroccan dish.Volunteers need to purchase their own lunch. There are plenty of restaurants in the Medina area or near your project. Eating out is not very expensive and there are plenty of options for you to choose from.

During your Free Time
During the weekdays volunteers usually enjoy roaming around the Medina area where the volunteer Riad is located. You will be located in the heart of the Old quarter area in Rabat which is characterized by small winding alleys and traditional markets. You can visit the Le Tour Hassan mosque or explore the Kasbah Les Oudaias area in Rabat as well. On the weekends volunteers head out further afield to places such as Fez, Marrakesh or the desert area.
