The ‘Pink City’ – Jaipur is one of the most beautiful towns of India with ample of Royal fervor to explore and enjoy. With trademark pink buildings and camel leather markets, the capital city of the state of Rajasthan is the pride of the western region of India. Take a cue from us and don’t forget to do these absolutely unmissable things in Jaipur.

1. Visit to the Amber Fort

One of the principal attractions of the city, Amber (Amer) fort is known for its artistic Hindu architecture. Facing the beautiful Maota lake, a good three to four hours are necessary to enjoy the fort in its entirety. Shopping for local souvenirs, elephant rides are some of the popular to do options when in Amer fort.

 

2. City Palace, Jaipur

A beautiful palace complex which is now partially a museum and partially a royal residence. Consisting of a wide array of courtyards, gardens and buildings, a visit to the city palace is a great way to get an insight into the royal history of Rajasthan.

 

3. Jantar Mantar

A must visit for astronomy enthusiasts, Jantar Mantar is a collection of nineteen architectural astronomical instruments, built by the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh, and completed in 1738 CE. This particular monument is known to have a mesmerising effect on its visitors and is highly recommended for all volunteers.

 

4. Jaipur Markets

Johari Bazar, Kishanpol Bazaar, Sireh Deori Bazar and Tripolia Bazar are some of the famous traditional markets of Jaipur. It is a great way to hone your bargaining skills and grab some uber classy and ethnic dresses, junk jewellery, handbags and other souvenirs. Shopping in jaipur calls for a dedicated day.

 

5. Hawa Mahal

Hawa (meaning breeze) Mahal is a beautiful monument which was named so because it was for the women folk. It was high rise so that it was separate from the prying eyes men and gave women the privacy they needed in olden times.

 

6. Jal Mahal

Counterpart of the Hawa Mahal, the Jal (jal meaning water) Mahal is right in the middle of a beautiful lake giving a fabulous view of the Aravallis and the serene surroundings.

 

7. Jaipur Literary Fest

The Jaipur Literary Fest is an annual affair and takes place every January. People from all over the world including well known Indian artists and authors attend the fest. A hustling fiesta with cultural shows in the evening, the fest compliments the chilly January weather of Jaipur perfectly.

 

8. Choki Dhani

“Choki Dhani” meaning a special village is bright and ethnic artificially created village that offers glimpses of local Rajasthani culture and lip-smacking food to gorge on. 20 KM from the city, this place is an absolute must when in Jaipur. Ideal for evenings, a visit to the Choki Dhani is also an inclusion of the India Summer Volunteer Project.

 

9. Day trip to Pushkar

Although this requires an extra day but can be quickly arranged. Pushkar is small Rajasthani sub-urban town known for its temples, deserts and camel fairs. Particularly recommended for visits during the winters.

 

10. Elephant Camps

Elephant Tourism is quite popular in Jaipur. Although it faces criticism at times, but it is helpful for the poor families of mahouts and also elephants as they get proper food and shelter in the camps. Volunteers get a special day at these camps to work for the wonderful and friendly animals along with the local families.

 

11. Jaigarh Fort

Relatively unknown, the Jaigarh fort in Jaipur is close to Maota Lake and Amer fort. A good place to click pictures, explore and have small picnic in. Can be visited after a thorough exploration of the Amer Fort.
