Volunteer in Tanzania FAQsHow long does it take to process my application?
The application process takes 10 working days -occasionally longer (given the time of year). However, in the event that interested participants require their application expedited due to time constraints, they are requested to contact our office prior to submitting their application. Where are the Programs located in Tanzania? The Programs are located in Kilimanjaro region in Moshi. When do I need to arrive in Tanzania for my program? You can come one day in advance from your program starting date. Do I need a VISA for Tanzania? Yes, you need to apply for a Tourist Visa before going to Tanzania. The Visa is valid for 3 months and costs USD 100(Please check the latest rates). Volunteer need to obtain a work permit on arrival, the coordinator would be assisting you to get the same from the local immigration office in Moshi. Which airport do I need to book my flights to? Volunteers going to Arusha or Moshi need to book their flights to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi or Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha. What should I do if my flight is delayed? Please inform your Country Coordinator and inform him of the delayed arrival time. If possible, send a mail to the coordinator and to the main office as well. If I want to arrive earlier than my program start date, where do I stay and who will organize the accommodations? You will be responsible for the accommodation and food, if you arrive several days earlier than your start date.(Arrive one day before start date) You must contact the coordinator and meet at some designated place. When will I know specific details of my placement? Once you have applied, we will send you details of your placement usually within 10 working days. What are the accommodation arrangements like? We provide you with accommodation from your start date to the end of the program. Accommodation will either be in a host family or arranged at your program location itself. You will have your own room, which you might share with another volunteer. You should bring along things like, mosquito net, mosquito repellent, towels and your own soaps and shampoos. What will be the food arrangement? Volunteers are provided with 2 meals during weekdays and 3 meals during weekends (if volunteers are at the premises). Local Tanzanian Food will be served to Volunteers. Will there be other foreign volunteers at my placement? Usually there are some volunteers at the placements, but it totally depends on the time period of the year during which you wish to volunteer. You can volunteer along with your friends or group and can be accommodated in the same accommodation or nearby accommodation. We do not guarantee that there would always be some foreign volunteers at your placement. What are the Laundry arrangements? You need to wash your clothes on your own. How is the Climate in Tanzania? Tanzania's weather varies from humid and hot in low lying areas, such as Dar es Salaam, to hot during the day and cool at night in Arusha. There are no discernible seasons, such as winter and summer -- only the dry and wet seasons. Tanzania has two rainy seasons: The short rains from late-October to late-December, a.k.a. the Mango Rains, and the long rains from March to May. What vaccinations/immunizations are required? If you are traveling from a country where yellow fever is present you will need to take a yellow fever vaccination. Several vaccinations are highly recommended, they include: * Yellow Fever * Typhoid * Hepatitis A & B Contact your doctor several weeks before you travel and seek advice regarding the vaccinations to take. Is Tanzania safe? Tanzania is pretty safe, but it is important that you should not act very ‘touristy’ and keep in mind general safety tips.Your safety tips would be provided in your Pre Departure Guide.Do not change too much money at one time and use the banks not the money changers. Are credit cards accepted in Tanzania? Major credit cards such as MasterCard and Visa are accepted. American Express, Discover, Solo, Switch and Diners Club are often not accepted. ATMs will mostly accept MasterCard, Visa and Visa Electron cards.Major credit cards are accepted at supermarkets and expensive restaurants and hotels. However, it is advisable to carry some cash. What hours will I volunteer every day? Volunteers usually work for 5-6 hours a day depending on their program. You will have weekend off so you can go to travel on weekends. However some organizations will need you to work on some Saturdays as well. Are we able to do any sightseeing or travelling in weekends? You will usually have 2 free days per week, you can utilize this time for anything you like. All costs are at the volunteer's expense. Do I need travel insurance?
